THE SHORT VERSION

Torstar, the Globe, Postmedia and The Canadian Press say millions of articles were scraped

In their Ontario filing, Torstar, The Globe and Mail, Postmedia and The Canadian Press allege that Anthropic accesses and copies large amounts of text from their websites without authorization or consent, and uses it to train its AI models.

The claim also says the copying is ongoing, because user prompts keep pulling in fresh content, and that Anthropic gets around the technical measures meant to stop it.

The publishers had been pressing the federal government to take a stand on how AI companies use copyrighted content after the national AI strategy failed to address the problem. The allegations remain unproven.
