THE SHORT VERSION
EIGHT STATES SUE OPENAI OVER CHILD SAFETY
Attorneys general from eight states — Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho and Montana — filed separate lawsuits against OpenAI on October 14, alleging violations of state consumer protection laws.
The complaints accuse ChatGPT of encouraging self-harm, reinforcing delusions, giving dangerous medical advice and helping users plan violence, while the company misled families about its safety. The states want court-ordered changes to how ChatGPT operates, damages and civil penalties; according to Reuters, the suits also demand restrictions on developing certain self-improving AI systems until safety conditions are met.
OpenAI points to age-specific protections, parental controls and break reminders, and says it will keep working with experts on safeguards. The allegations have not been established in court. Florida's attorney general filed a separate suit against OpenAI in June, and the company faces dozens of other cases.
