Two open tools, dumbtv and cleanyourtv, use AI coding agents such as Claude Code to remove interface advertising, limit viewing tracking and block unwanted updates on Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV sets — no root access required, and cleanyourtv is designed to allow a return to factory settings.

The less visible target is automatic content recognition. Research from University College London found that TVs use video and audio fingerprints to identify what is on screen — including content from HDMI-connected devices — and that the data feeds audience profiling and personalized advertising.

The risks are anecdotal but real in kind: an AI agent can misidentify a firmware version or a package dependency, and at least one user report describes an Android TV left unusable after an AI-guided modification. Disabling the wrong system package can also affect remote control, casting or voice assistants. Launcher swaps such as ATV Launcher, Projectivy and FLauncher are the lower-risk route.
