Canada’s biggest newspapers are suing Anthropic in Ontario over Claude training

A group of Canada's largest news publishers — Postmedia, Torstar, The Globe and Mail and The Canadian Press — is suing Anthropic in Ontario court, claiming the company infringed their copyright by using their content to develop Claude. The suit was filed on October 6.

The statement of claim says Anthropic built its commercial AI business and raised significant capital without ever obtaining a licence from the publishers, and alleges the company breached and circumvented the measures they put in place to prevent copying of their content.

The allegations have not been proven in court. The same publishers, together with CBC, sued OpenAI in 2024; that case has also not been settled.
