Canada’s biggest newspapers are suing Anthropic in Ontario over Claude training

Canada's largest news publishers — Postmedia, Torstar, The Globe and Mail and The Canadian Press — filed a copyright lawsuit against Anthropic in Ontario court on October 6, first reported by Cartt. They allege Anthropic infringed their copyright by using their journalism, without a licence, to develop its Claude models.

The statement of claim says Anthropic built an expansive suite of services and raised significant capital without obtaining a licence from any of the news companies, and circumvented measures meant to prevent copying. The publishers had previously pressed the federal government after the national AI strategy did not address AI use of copyrighted content. The allegations have not been proven, and the same publishers, with CBC, sued OpenAI in 2024 in a case that remains unsettled.
