THE SHORT VERSION
Torstar, the Globe, Postmedia and The Canadian Press say millions of articles were scraped
The publishers' claim centres on scraping: it alleges Anthropic deliberately copies large amounts of text from the internet and from the plaintiffs' own websites, then uses it without authorisation or consent to train and run Claude. Coverage of the claim describes millions of works at issue, with The Canadian Press alone accounting for about 4.2 million, and says scraping is alleged to be ongoing, including in response to user prompts.
Beyond copyright infringement, the claim alleges breach of website terms, circumvention of paywalls, logins and other technological protections, and unjust enrichment from Claude's commercial success. It also argues Claude can reproduce their work in answers, diverting readers and advertisers. The publishers seek damages and injunctions, according to coverage of the filing. None of the allegations has been proven in court.
