The story behind the cartoon
Marvell announced on Monday that it will acquire Lumentum in an all-stock transaction with an implied enterprise value of $115 billion, paying a fixed 4.500 Marvell shares for each Lumentum share — a 23.9% premium to Lumentum's closing price on October 28, before deal talks were first reported.
The combination joins Marvell's chips and electrical interconnect with Lumentum's lasers, transceivers and optical switching. The companies pitch a $550 billion addressable market and more than $1 billion in annual run-rate cost synergies, and expect the deal to close in the first half of 2028, subject to shareholder votes and regulatory clearances.
Reuters calls it one of the biggest deals of 2026 and among the boldest corporate bets yet on the AI boom: demand for the optical components that move data at high speed is outstripping supply, and Nvidia invested $2 billion in each company earlier in 2026.
The smallest thing in the AI machine — a beam of light — now carries the biggest price tag, and it is holding up the whole data center without breaking a sweat.
