The story behind the cartoon
Anthropic disclosed in an amended IPO filing made public on Monday, November 2, that its third-quarter revenue reached nearly $17 billion, up roughly twelvefold from $1.38 billion a year earlier and above the $11.56 billion it reported for the second quarter.
The same filing reported a $23.3 billion net loss for the quarter, widened from $12.1 billion a year earlier, and operating expenses up 292% year over year to $17.5 billion. Most of the net loss came from marking convertible notes to a higher company valuation, while computing and infrastructure costs reached $9.86 billion, or 58% of revenue.
The filing also disclosed $895.4 billion in purchase commitments and lease agreements, substantially all of it for computing and infrastructure, ahead of a planned Nasdaq listing under the ticker ANT before the Thanksgiving holiday.
Anthropic brought home the trophy for revenue — and then had to make room on the shelf for the much bigger trophy it did not want.
