The story behind the cartoon
Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission has traced suspected AI-generated photographs in its preliminary voter register to registration officers who abused their login credentials, its director of information and communication technology, Lawrence Bayode, said on Arise Television on October 30.
The row erupted after social media users spotted artificial-looking portraits in polling-unit entries in Edo State when the preliminary register went online on October 26, alongside complaints about duplicate entries and names of deceased people in the database; the commission's biometric system identified the accounts behind the uploads.
Cleanup is underway ahead of final certification on December 15, while officials concede they know how the irregularities got in but not why.
The register's newest voters have no birthdays, no addresses and no patience — they just walked in through the officer's login and smiled for a camera that never existed.
