The story behind the cartoon
OpenAI has added card and device limits to ChatGPT signups, The Decoder reports: users who link too many paid subscriptions to one payment card or device can no longer start new ones, and each device caps how many paid accounts it can hold.
Hitting the cap shows “Device limit reached,” and logging out does not free the slot; the limits cover Go, Plus and Pro, while free, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not count.
The squeeze lands days after ChatGPT shipped two-account switching, pointing would-be subscription stackers toward pricier extra credits or usage resets instead.
Logging out is now checkout without leaving: you walk out with your suitcase, and your ghost keeps the seat warm for you.
