The story behind the cartoon
Axios reports OpenAI will launch a policy and public-relations blitz right after Tuesday's midterm elections, with proposals its global affairs team, led by Chris Lehane, has stockpiled since August, beginning in the congressional lame-duck session that opens November 9.
The push centers on mandatory safeguards for the most powerful AI systems, which OpenAI describes as speed limits, alongside new community compacts and state legislation giving host communities a say in how data-center projects are built and what benefits they receive; OpenAI points to a large project in Pike County, Ohio, that it says will bring thousands of jobs.
As part of the effort, OpenAI will argue that the infrastructure it builds differs from legacy data centers and should be called “AI compute campuses,” a deliberately provocative rebrand aimed at stemming bipartisan backlash after $173 million in mostly negative general-election advertising about data centers, according to AdImpact figures reported by Axios.
The campus has no students, no quad and no lectures — just the same humming warehouse, the same barbed-wire fence, and a shinier sign, as if renaming the building enrolls it somewhere.
