THE SHORT VERSION
ZUCK'S OCT. 30 ULTIMATUM: LET META SCRAPE YOUR WEBSITE — OR QUIT META
The News/Media Alliance, the trade group for more than 2,000 U.S. newspapers, magazines, and digital publishers, delivered a letter to Mark Zuckerberg demanding Meta withdraw its revised Commercial Terms of Use before they take effect on October 30. The terms let Meta scrape content from any website associated with a business account on its platforms — which covers virtually every newsroom — and feed it to Meta's business products, including its AI tools.
The Alliance calls the move an 'exercise of market power' that is 'anticompetitive,' warning that unchecked scraping would 'threaten the financial viability of the free press' by letting Meta 'snatch that content for free' instead of paying for licenses — and that publishers cannot block Meta's crawlers without harming their ability to promote content on the platform.
