The story behind the cartoon
Nothing CEO Carl Pei said in an X post on November 4 that the company's first AI-native product ships in December — and the one hard detail he gave is what it leaves out: it has no new screen, and, in his words, it couldn't have been an app.
Nothing has not named the product or given a price, specifications, or an exact December date; the teaser image shows only a dark rounded corner marked NOTHING(R).
Pei's accompanying essay argues the industry is missing the fleeting context that never reaches a model — an idea over coffee, a throwaway comment that unblocks a week — which reads as a strong hint at an ambient recorder, though Nothing has not confirmed what the device actually does.
The joke is the screen-less beat: a man stirs his coffee as his bright idea floats out of his head toward the window, and the small rounded NOTHING device on the table — no screen anywhere — catches it mid-air with a butterfly net.
