The story behind the cartoon
Wall Street's AI stocks bounced back on Friday, November 6, stopping the worldwide rout: the Nasdaq closed up 1.1% and the S&P 500 rose 0.3% on a jobs report that beat every forecast, with Nvidia climbing roughly 3% after Thursday's 9.3% plunge and Lam Research jumping 8.5% on a 5 billion buyback.
The bounce only clawed back a fraction of the damage — the Nasdaq still lost 3.4% on the week and the S&P 500 fell 2.7%, its worst week since April 2025 — driven by the midterm sweep and investor fear that the AI data-center build-out will slow and never pay for itself.
It was a relief rally, not a reversal: one good Friday against a week that gave back far more than the bounce recovered.
The joke is the bounce-after-the-rout beat: Merv the robot kneels in the crater and sticks a tiny green +1.1% bandage on the giant cracked red arrow, beside a sign reading WEEK -3.4%, while Issue the cat watches from the rim, unimpressed.
