The story behind the cartoon
Nvidia is stepping up how it tracks the artificial intelligence chips it sells in Southeast Asia, Bloomberg reported on Friday, requiring buyers in the region to sign up for its Fleet Intelligence tracking system if they want to become official Nvidia Cloud Partners. The partner label brings priority access to Nvidia's most sought-after chips and a public stamp of approval, and Nvidia is using that perk to push more buyers into the tracking program, which logs the physical location of AI chips inside data centers.
The push is aimed at smuggling: US rules bar Chinese companies from buying top Nvidia AI chips without a license, but American officials believe billions of dollars of banned processors have reached China through networks operating across Southeast Asia. In March, authorities arrested Super Micro co-founder Wally Liaw on charges of plotting to smuggle $2.5 billion of Nvidia GPU servers into China, and federal prosecutors unsealed a $300 million smuggling indictment against Earthmade Computer earlier this year. Customs officials also seized 30 server units containing advanced AI chips at Kuala Lumpur airport on October 15, a shipment valued at about $12.1 million.
The debate has centered on Singapore-based Megaspeed International, which won Cloud Partner status within a week of its founding in 2023 and has faced US and Singapore probes for over a year; the New York Times reported last week that US officials suspect a top Megaspeed executive of spying for Beijing. Three House Republican committee chairs asked Nvidia chief Jensen Huang for a closed-door briefing on November 18 about his interactions with the executive. Nvidia launched Fleet Intelligence nearly a year ago as a data-center management tool; it does not automatically force users to share location data with Nvidia or the US government. The company has also cut about half of the Asian firms on its pre-approved buyer list and told cloud buyers not to rent more than half of their Nvidia computing power to Chinese clients.
The joke is the leash: Jensen Huang strains in his black leather jacket to hold back a giant crowned dog whose body is an Nvidia graphics card, lunging toward a sign that says CHINA — the most powerful chip on earth, walked like a pet so it can't run off to Beijing.
