The story behind the cartoon
The Financial Times reported on Sunday that Anthropic has agreed to pay about $3.4 billion for 1.7 gigawatts of gas-fired generators to power its data centers, ahead of the Claude maker's planned public listing. Anthropic secured the commitments in late September from OnePWR Solutions, a San Antonio company that builds microgrids and on-site power plants. Anthropic and OnePWR declined to comment, and Reuters, which reported the FT's account, said it could not immediately verify the report.
OnePWR had ordered the heavy-duty generators from Caterpillar about two years ago but needed financing to complete the purchase, according to the FT's account. Anthropic first planned to become a OnePWR customer, then chose to take over the existing equipment orders instead. The deal also covers the engineering and construction work needed to install the generators; Anthropic did not acquire OnePWR itself, and none of the supplier's employees transferred to the AI company.
The purchase lands as Anthropic prepares to go public — the FT reported Friday that the company intends to list before Thanksgiving — and as its own IPO paperwork warns that generators, turbines and other power equipment face extended delivery timelines, price increases, tariffs and rationing as data-center operators compete for them. Anthropic has disclosed roughly $895 billion in compute and infrastructure commitments, most of it due before 2045.
The joke is the scale mismatch: the polite little chatbot, all smiles and blush, wrestling a plug the size of a car into a gas-belching generator big enough to swallow the data center behind it. The friendliest company in AI is buying its own power plant.
