The story behind the cartoon
OpenAI rolled out Images 2.6 on November 4 across ChatGPT and Codex, free tier included: type a prompt or upload a photo and get back a looping GIF you can speed up or edit frame by frame, with images claimed about 50% faster.
Two new API models arrived with it — Flare for speed, Sunburst for consistency — as weekly image generation passes 4 billion. The feature turns a still photo into something that will not sit still.
It is a small launch with a big tell: the photo is no longer the finished artifact. The still image now comes with a loop attached, and the loop is the point.
The joke is the looping-photo beat: Merv the robot holds up a photograph labeled GIF, inside which Issue the cat keeps knocking a glass of water off a table in an endless loop — three glasses, one arc — while the real Issue sleeps curled beside him, unbothered.
