The story behind the cartoon
OpenAI consumer product lead Adam Fry told Big Technology's Alex Kantrowitz at an OpenAI-hosted dinner in New York that ChatGPT's volume of search-like queries is now roughly one-fifth the volume of Google's queries, a jump built in about a year and a half since ChatGPT gained up-to-date information.
Fry said ChatGPT grew from 1 billion to 1.2 billion weekly active users in the last two months, and that its users create 1.5 billion images with it per week.
Fry described the shift plainly: questions users once took to a traditional search engine are now going to ChatGPT instead, especially questions needing up-to-date, factual answers such as finance and health.
Google built a cathedral with five tall windows for your questions, and the crowd is lining up at a folding table instead — the sixth window is a card table, and it is winning.
