The story behind the cartoon
GitHub's Octoverse 2026 report says more than 40 percent of pull requests started with an agent's first draft by September, up from 17 percent in March.
That is 110 million agent-started pull requests in September alone, merging within two weeks 90 percent of the time.
The report frames human review as the shaping step: agents draft the changes at industrial volume, and humans check, edit, and approve them.
The robots now write nearly half the code, and the last human job in software is standing at the end of the conveyor with a red pencil, fixing the robots' homework one sheet at a time.
