The story behind the cartoon
Oracle filed Monday to raise $20 billion — $10 billion in new shares and $10 billion in senior notes — to fund its AI and cloud infrastructure buildout, using up the entire $20 billion in additional financing it had promised investors just last week would last through fiscal 2030.
Shares fell 8.8% on the news, and Oracle already carried $125.34 billion in borrowings against $67.36 billion in fiscal 2026 revenue.
Pimco CEO Emmanuel Roman warned at Hong Kong's Global Financial Leaders' Investment Summit that AI capital spending could reach about $10 trillion over five years, with about $550 billion in AI debt already issued in 2026, and that at some point the financing "will become too much."
Oracle is building the future on a pile of IOUs, and the pile is now load-bearing — pull one block and the data center, the stock price, and the bond chief's warning all come down together.
