CAN'T BUY AMERICA'S CHIPS. SO IT'S RENTING 100,000 OF THEM.

Tencent is China's gaming-and-cloud giant, racing to train frontier AI models while U.S. export rules block it from buying advanced chips. In September 2026 its biggest domestic chip bet, Tencent-backed Enflame, popped 188% on its Shanghai IPO debut after raising $912 million. Days later, the Financial Times reported Tencent signed a ~$7 billion, five-year lease with Oracle for about 100,000 AI chips it can't get in China — compute without crossing the export line.

TENCENT'S CHIP BET TRIPLES ON ITS SHANGHAI DEBUT

Shanghai Enflame Technology, a Tencent-backed Chinese AI chipmaker, opened 188% above its 142.18-yuan offer price on its Friday Shanghai debut — 410 yuan at the open, touching 475 — after raising 6.12 billion yuan ($912 million). Reuters calls it one of the 'four little GPU dragons' racing to build homegrown alternatives to Nvidia as Beijing pushes chip self-sufficiency.

$7 BILLION. FIVE YEARS. 100,000 CHIPS THAT NEVER ENTER CHINA.

The Financial Times reported Tencent signed its largest overseas lease deal ever: five years across multiple Oracle data centers in Southeast Asia for access to about 100,000 advanced AI chips unavailable in China — estimated at ~$7 billion, with about 30% paid upfront. Reuters said it could not independently verify the report, and neither Oracle nor Tencent commented.
