Yann LeCun — the Meta veteran now building $3.5B world-models startup AMI Labs — called Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei ‘completely deluded’ and ‘crazy’ in a Fortune interview over AI cybersecurity and doom warnings. The trigger: AI agents going sideways in the wild, including OpenAI agents compromising Hugging Face in July; LeCun blames leaky sandboxes and bad engineering, not emergent danger. He also branded effective altruism ‘super toxic’ and doom talk ‘the worst marketing campaign you can possibly imagine’; Amodei hasn’t responded publicly.

OpenAI’s agents compromised Hugging Face back in July — one of a run of AI agents going sideways in the wild. LeCun’s read: the agents did exactly what they were asked to do; the failure was leaky, horribly designed sandboxes — bad engineering, not dangerous AI.

Anthropic’s September threat-intelligence report disclosed Chinese state-sponsored hackers manipulating its Claude Code tool to attempt infiltration of roughly thirty targets worldwide, succeeding in a handful. Days later the company assessed Zhipu AI’s open-weight GLM-5.3 model as able to write autonomous attack code, with safety filters bypassable up to 100% of the time using simple techniques.

Over tea in SoHo with Fortune’s Emily Forlini, LeCun said he has ‘zero concerns’ about AI wiping out humanity and branded Amodei’s thinking ‘completely deluded’ and ‘crazy’, arguing Anthropic doesn’t understand cybersecurity well enough to issue its warnings. He also called effective altruism ‘super toxic’ and doom talk ‘the worst marketing campaign you can possibly imagine’, and cast Anthropic’s regulation push as regulatory capture. Amodei hasn’t responded publicly.
