THE SHORT VERSION

Toyota will build Waymo's robotaxis for Japan and the UK

Toyota and Waymo announced on October 30 that Toyota will build 2027 bZ4X electric SUVs with Waymo's self-driving system integrated on the factory line at its Takaoka plant in Japan, with testing and validation in Japan starting in 2027 and the United Kingdom and other right-hand-drive markets to follow.

It is the first concrete vehicle out of the preliminary agreement the two companies signed in April 2025: the first operations in Japan will involve a small test fleet, with a commercial ride-hailing service planned to follow, while Waymo has already been testing Jaguar I-Pace vehicles in London for months as it awaits operating permits there.

The companies also said they will explore bringing Waymo's technology to personally owned Toyota vehicles and using insights from real-world operations to improve road safety, but they disclosed no vehicle counts, prices, sensor details, or dates for the UK rollout.
