THE SHORT VERSION

OpenAI cuts teens off from weapons info, harmless question or not

OpenAI said on October 30 that ChatGPT will restrict practical information about weapons and security systems for teen accounts, even when a question looks harmless and shows no sign of violent intent. Teens can still use ChatGPT for preventing and de-escalating violence, seeking support, and reaching a trusted adult.

For all users, ChatGPT will be able to end a chat on its own when someone appears to be fixating on violence, and OpenAI may temporarily pause an account after several such chats. The company is also limiting detail about past mass attacks, including the weapons used and how they were obtained.

OpenAI says it strengthened its age-prediction system so users it estimates are under 18 are moved into the teen experience, and it plans to tell parents when a teen account is paused for repeatedly discussing violence. The safeguards begin rolling out over the next few weeks, alongside a first Community Safety Report planned for early 2027.
