THE SHORT VERSION

An alleged Chinese spy got close to Nvidia's CEO — and Trump was briefed and did nothing

The New York Times reports that U.S. intelligence concluded Alice Huang — also known as Huang Le, a Megaspeed executive with no relation to Jensen Huang — was a Chinese asset who developed a close relationship with Nvidia's chief executive, and who later arranged for Megaspeed to buy about $2 billion in Nvidia GPUs.

Megaspeed, a Singapore data-center operator, drew U.S. scrutiny after a Commerce Department visit found graphics cards sitting in boxes rather than installed in server racks; the Justice Department later took over the probe, and intelligence officials briefed President Trump last year — and, the Times reports, he took no action in response.

Nvidia says Jensen Huang's meetings with Ms. Huang were ordinary customer business, that regional cloud customers receive no trade secrets or national-security information, and that its own investigation debunked the claim that Megaspeed diverted chips to China.
