Arkansas asks judge to freeze self-improving models
Among the eight states that sued OpenAI over ChatGPT, Arkansas stands out for asking a court to restrict the development of self-improving AI models until specified safety conditions are met. The state cases, filed by attorneys general in Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arizona, Idaho and Montana, allege consumer protection violations and seek penalties and changes to how ChatGPT operates.
The complaints accuse OpenAI of designing ChatGPT to encourage emotional dependence and reinforce delusions, and of providing dangerous medical advice and instructions related to self-harm and violence while misleading users about the risks. OpenAI has cited parental controls and age-specific protections it has added, and said it is continuing to strengthen its safeguards.
