THE SHORT VERSION
Point Claude at your TV and it deletes the ads
Developers and hobbyist coders are using AI coding tools to strip sponsored ads, bloatware and tracking from smart TVs, TechCrunch reported. Two GitHub projects anchor the trend: dumbtv, whose stated aim is a set that shows only your apps and HDMI inputs with no ads, watch tracking or unrequested updates, and cleanyourtv, which promises to clean Android TV or Google TV over Wi-Fi and replace the launcher with one resembling Apple TV.
In one widely shared example, developer Gathin T. gave Claude Code his parents' TV model number after a sponsored ad appeared before Netflix. The agent found the set on Wi-Fi, removed 25 Xiaomi packages and wrote a new launcher. The hacks respond to frustration with automatic content recognition, which identifies what is on screen using screenshots, audio clips or fingerprinting, feeding an ad business built on viewing data.
