Arkansas asks judge to freeze self-improving models

Arkansas joined seven other states suing OpenAI over ChatGPT's safety, but its filing goes further on frontier development: the state is seeking to restrict advanced AI testing and the development of self-improving models until additional safeguards are in place. The broader suits allege violations of state consumer protection laws, misleading claims about safety, and a design that encourages emotional dependence and reinforces delusions.

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird accused OpenAI of claiming ChatGPT is safe while giving dangerous medical advice and coaching people toward self-harm and violence. OpenAI has introduced parental controls, age-specific protections and break reminders, and defended those measures, while already facing separate lawsuits from families alleging the chatbot contributed to crises and suicides.
