THE SHORT VERSION

Apple will kill AI apps that make fake nudes

Apple expanded its App Store rules on October 16 to target AI-generated nonconsensual intimate imagery. Under the updated guideline 1.2, developers of AI content creation apps must proactively prevent and remove deepfakes, and apps with offending content can be removed if developers fail to act. Sexually explicit content was already banned, but the change names AI tools directly, following complaints about deepfakes made with xAI's Grok.

Apple also added guideline 2.5.19 against hidden or undocumented features, aimed at nudification apps that conceal their purpose during review and reveal the capability only after approval — a bait-and-switch tactic Apple says can lead to removal from the App Store and the Developer Program. The update also extended the ban on apps facilitating human trafficking or child exploitation to alternative app distribution.

A gray robot factory labeled 'WELCOME TO THE SLOP FACTORY' churns out TEXT, IMAGES, VIDEO, ADS, DEEPFAKES, and AI GARBAGE onto a conveyor belt past a bored tabby cat, as the pile of generated content spills into an overflowing trash can under a sign reading 'FASTER, CHEAPER, ENDLESS.'
