THE SHORT VERSION

Uncle Sam yanks DeepSeek off every federal computer

Reuters reported on October 19 that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is ordering the removal of DeepSeek products, and third-party services using the Chinese AI model, from U.S. civilian agency IT systems. The department is also banning civilian agencies from acquiring DeepSeek products or services developed using DeepSeek, widening the restriction beyond the company's own app and API.

DHS said DeepSeek presents multiple threat vectors and that use by government employees or vendors may result in the transfer of sensitive data to the People's Republic of China, or produce actionable intelligence on U.S. persons and agencies. The Commerce Department, the Navy and several states, including New York, Tennessee and Virginia, had already imposed their own bans.
