THE SHORT VERSION
UNCLE SAM ORDERS DEEPSEEK RIPPED OUT OF EVERY FEDERAL AGENCY
The Department of Homeland Security has ordered federal civilian agencies to stop using DeepSeek and remove its products from their IT systems, according to a notice published in the Federal Register. DHS warned that use of the Chinese company's models could result in the transfer of sensitive data belonging to U.S. government employees and vendors to the Chinese government, and it barred DeepSeek from participating in federal government contracts.
The order reaches agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Federal Communications Commission, which must exclude DeepSeek products and remove existing ones. DHS said the models could contain malware or other security vulnerabilities. The move came days after DeepSeek released a new model, V4.1-Flash-1017, and follows earlier efforts in Congress and at individual agencies to keep the chatbot off government devices.
