The story behind the cartoon
Anthropic published an engineering post on November 6 describing how Claude keeps what it learns between sessions — in idle time it rereads its own logs, corrects notes that turned out wrong, and builds linked wiki pages from what it found.
The demo is disarmingly concrete: playing Pokémon Red, one Claude wrote down the wrong location for a PokéCenter and walked off a one-way ledge three times before a dreaming pass caught the error against the transcript and rewrote the note.
A leaner memory worked better: ten files instead of 413 earned four badges where the hoarder earned one — the dreaming pass is what turns a pile of notes into something the model can actually use.
The joke is the quiet-correction beat: Merv the robot sleeps at his desk, cheek on his notebook, red pencil crossing out the wrong PokéCenter and drawing the corrected map — the dream cloud above him showing the pixel trainer at the cliff edge, the wrong PokéCenter crossed out in red.
