The story behind the cartoon
Anthropic launched Personal Finance in Claude on Thursday, November 5, a beta feature that lets paid subscribers in the United States connect bank and credit card accounts through Plaid and ask Claude about their money in plain language. For each linked account, Claude can see the bank and account names, the account type, balances, credit limits, and up to two years of transaction history.
Access is read-only: Anthropic says Personal Finance can't move, manage, or invest money, and it isn't designed to give investment advice. Users sign in to their bank themselves through Plaid, so Claude never asks for or sees a bank password, and Anthropic says chats in the Personal Finance hub are not used to train its models.
The rollout starts this week in beta for Pro, Max, and Ultra subscribers in the US, on Claude for the web, desktop, and mobile apps. Claude arrives months after ChatGPT launched its own finance feature in May — and two weeks after major US banks moved to block unauthorized AI agents found inside customer accounts.
The joke is the all-seeing accountant who can only judge: a cheerful robot in a green visor holds up two years of Merv's transactions — every coffee, every subscription — while Merv sweats and clutches his wallet, because the machine knows exactly what he spent and can't do a thing about it.
