The story behind the cartoon
Alphabet reported third-quarter revenue of $127.6 billion, up 25%, with Google Cloud revenue more than doubled to $30.7 billion on AI infrastructure demand. The cloud business is now growing fast enough to double — and the market still flinched.
Shares fell as much as 8% after hours, because capital spending hit $51.4 billion — more than double a year earlier — and free cash flow went to negative $9.1 billion. The AI buildout is eating the cash about as fast as the cloud can print it.
That is the whole quarter in one picture: a business doubling on AI demand, funded by furnace-scale spending, with the cash-flow statement running red while the revenue line runs green. Growth this expensive stops looking like a victory lap and starts looking like a furnace that needs constant feeding.
The joke is the furnace: the cloud got twice as big, the money went in by the conveyor-load, and out the other side came an empty box labeled FREE CASH FLOW. The cloud didn't just grow — it ate.
