The story behind the cartoon
Microsoft disclosed in its fiscal first-quarter filing that it recorded $10 billion in revenue from commercial arrangements with OpenAI in the three months ended September 30, 2026. The figure, which includes revenue-sharing payments and Azure cloud services, amounts to nearly 11% of Microsoft's $92.3 billion in total quarterly revenue, according to TechCrunch's report on the filing.
The OpenAI line has grown into one of Microsoft's largest single-customer relationships. For the full 2026 fiscal year, Microsoft recorded $24.1 billion in revenue from OpenAI arrangements. It also reported $7.2 billion in outstanding receivables from OpenAI at the end of September, up from $6 billion at the end of June — amounts owed for previous transactions, not additional revenue.
The financial ties remain large even as the partnership loosens. Under an April 2026 agreement, OpenAI may work with competing cloud providers, but it must keep sharing revenue with Microsoft through 2030, subject to a cap. Microsoft's broader quarter was also a record: revenue up 19% year over year, with Azure revenue up 48% to $33.2 billion.
The joke in Zimbo's cartoon is the landlord dynamic: the company racing to own the future still hauls its rent to Microsoft's window. A small, worried OpenAI robot, pockets turned inside out and empty, heaves a gigantic sack marked $10 BILLION up the steps while a calm Microsoft clerk holds out a hand to collect.
