The story behind the cartoon
OpenAI is standing up an election ‘war room’ ahead of the US midterm elections, the company told Politico exclusively on Wednesday. The team will watch for the spread of misinformation and other efforts to disrupt the vote, with the midterms days away.
The announcement lands on top of OpenAI's own election safeguards. Earlier this month the company began steering ChatGPT requests for realistic election imagery — a fake photo of someone stuffing a ballot box, for example — into cartoon-style illustrations instead, so the output can't be mistaken for documentary evidence. Independent testing by the Brennan Center for Justice in October found ChatGPT made the most progress of the six major AI tools it tested, turning nearly every election prompt into an illustration, while two rivals made it easier to create convincing fakes.
OpenAI has spent the year positioning itself as an election defender: it published a 2026 election-safeguards plan in May, partnered with the nonpartisan nonprofit Democracy Works and the Associated Press on accurate voting information and live results, and in early October said it had disrupted two covert influence operations from Russia and Iran that used AI to run deceptive campaigns.
The joke in Zimbo's cartoon is the mismatch in scale: a giant printer labeled AI churns out fake political photos faster than they can catch fire, while one small worried robot in a firefighter helmet tries to put the blaze out with a tiny extinguisher — and the cat, as usual, already knows how this ends.
