THE NEURAL-NET HERETIC WHO LEFT GOOGLE TO WARN US

Hinton spent decades on neural networks while computer science doubted them — a holdout from the post-‘Perceptrons’ AI winter, when Minsky and Papert’s 1969 critique nearly killed connectionism. Then AlexNet detonated the old consensus and Google bought his tiny spinout. In 2023 he left Google to warn about the technology’s risks — and in 2024 the neural-net heretic won the Nobel Prize in Physics.

1. 1978

   A PHD IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE BEFORE IT WAS COOL

   Hinton completed a PhD in artificial intelligence at the University of Edinburgh in 1978 and continued working on neural networks through years when the approach was unfashionable.
