THE PHILOSOPHER WHO SAID MINDS NEED NO GHOST

Dennett spent more than fifty years at Tufts arguing that minds, selves, and purpose can emerge from physical processes — no ghost in the machine. That made him the philosopher the AI debate can't avoid: he spent decades arguing John Searle's Chinese Room proved nothing about machine understanding. He died in April 2024 at 82.

   DENNETT LEAVES OXFORD WITH A PHILOSOPHY OF MIND PROBLEM

   Dennett completed his DPhil in philosophy at Oxford in 1965 under Gilbert Ryle — who coined 'the ghost in the machine' to mock Cartesian dualism — after earning his undergraduate degree at Harvard.
