THE SHORT VERSION

Mistral's trillion-parameter 'Le Chonk' is now free to download

Mistral released the open weights of Mistral Large 4 — the 1-trillion-parameter multimodal model it nicknames ‘Le Chonk’ — on October 29, after three more weeks of reinforcement learning on top of the public preview. Anyone can now download the weights from Hugging Face and run the model on their own hardware, under a modified MIT license.

Mistral says the improved model leads open-weight coding benchmarks: 19.7% on Cognition’s FrontierCode 2.0, 48% on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index while using 47% fewer tokens than the nearest rival, and 41% on Terminal-Bench 4.0. It also scores 51% on the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index for defensive security work and refuses 96.6% of malicious cyber requests.

The sovereignty pitch is the point: Mistral trained the model from scratch on 3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in its own European data centers, so governments and companies can host a frontier-class model themselves instead of renting it from an American lab.
