THE SHORT VERSION

Google keeps human-reviewed chats for three years, even after you delete them

Satirical cartoon: Merv the robot pays for a Gemini confession booth while a huge cheerful Gemini robot devours copies of his private chats, a human reviewer reads one beside a filing cabinet marked UP TO 3 YEARS, and the KEEP ACTIVITY OFF lever feeds a CHAT HISTORY shredder, on plain white paper.

The policy covers personal accounts at every tier — paying changes nothing — while Google's commercial API, Vertex AI and Workspace tiers sit under separate terms that exempt customer data from training.

A subset of chats is also read by human reviewers, and Google warns users not to enter confidential information a reviewer wouldn't want to see; reviewed copies are kept for up to three years even after the user deletes their activity.
