THE SHORT VERSION
ChatGPT now handles a fifth of Google's searches, OpenAI says
OpenAI consumer product lead Adam Fry told Big Technology's Alex Kantrowitz at an OpenAI-hosted dinner in New York on Monday night that ChatGPT's volume of search-like queries is now roughly one-fifth the volume of Google's queries — a jump built in about a year and a half since ChatGPT gained up-to-date information.
Fry also said ChatGPT grew from 1 billion to 1.2 billion weekly active users in the last two months, about 100 million new users every 30 days, and that its users create 1.5 billion images with it per week.
Fry defines a search broadly: anything a user would once have taken to a traditional search engine — looking up a person, a place or a thing, or finance and health questions where up-to-date, factual answers matter — now asked of ChatGPT instead, which then runs a web search.
