Google to schools: ban our AI and your students lose Search

Google announced Tuesday that its AI tools for K-12 students will be off by default next year until school administrators explicitly turn them on, covering Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search.

The catch, confirmed by Google's education chief to the New York Times: schools that restrict AI altogether will also lose Search, because AI features are now built into the search engine itself, and students will see a message saying it is not available.

The change reverses Google's August move to switch AI features on by default in Classroom, and it lands alongside a new Guided Learning tutor mode — with districts that banned classroom AI, including New York City and Los Angeles, now forced to choose between the AI and the search box.
