THE SHORT VERSION
OpenAI caps how many paid ChatGPT accounts one device can hold
OpenAI has added card and device limits to ChatGPT signups, The Decoder reports: users who link too many paid subscriptions to one payment card or device can no longer start new ones, and each device caps how many paid accounts it can hold.
Hit the cap and the account shows “Device limit reached” — and logging out does not free the slot, according to OpenAI's support page. The limits cover Go, Plus and the Pro tiers, while free, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts don't count.
The squeeze lands days after OpenAI shipped account switching, and instead of stacking cheap subscriptions for more usage, users are pointed to extra credits or usage resets, which generally cost more.
