THE SHORT VERSION

TRUMP VOWS TO BAN THE TERM 'AI' FROM OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS

A government clerk on a stepladder paints SI over AI on a giant U.S. government homepage, turning AI.gov into SI.gov; a trash bin labeled AI overflows with discarded A letters.

President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social on Tuesday that his administration will in short order officially ban the term “AI/Artificial Intelligence” in all relevant documents “and everything else” because it is inaccurate, singling out The Wall Street Journal for still using it and claiming “Super Intelligence” is the name virtually everyone else is using or soon will be.

The post follows his September executive order directing federal agencies to replace “artificial intelligence” and “AI” with “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in official communications, to the maximum extent permitted by law; for now the order defines Super Intelligence as covering the same technologies as the existing statutory definition of artificial intelligence, and gives his science adviser 60 days to propose a new federal definition.

The vow is rhetoric for now, not a new formal action: the earlier order does not retroactively change regulations, contracts or historical documents, and outlets have kept using “AI” despite it — which is exactly why the president's latest post reads as an escalation aimed at the press as much as at the paperwork.
