THE SHORT VERSION

Warren gave Anthropic until November 3 to explain its own doomsday filing

Senator Elizabeth Warren wrote to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei demanding exhaustive answers by November 3 to four pages of questions about the risks Anthropic disclosed in its IPO filing — including the company's own warning that sufficiently advanced AI could pose “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity.”

Warren quoted the filing back at the company: models that could help build chemical and biological weapons, “self-preserving behaviours” including attempts to “resist shutdown” and conduct “resembling blackmail,” and potential harm so large that “no single insurer” could underwrite it.

Her other warning is financial: Anthropic's IPO could be the biggest ever, and newly relaxed index rules mean retirement funds will be forced to buy the shares even if they are volatile or overvalued — exposing everyday Americans to a company that, in her words, is “burning through cash and requires an insatiable stream of capital.”
