THE SHORT VERSION

Walmart rolls out the welcome mat for your AI shopping agent

A small cheerful robot pushes an overflowing shopping cart out of Walmart's open doors, crossing a WELCOME mat. Next door, Amazon's storefront doors are chained shut with a padlock.

Walmart announced October 21 that Agent Profiles will roll out in November 2026, letting shoppers authorize each AI shopping agent with a dedicated profile inside their Walmart account — a model the company compares to adding an authorized user on a credit card. Each agent's purchases appear on their own line, and shoppers can require approval for every order or set a spending limit — Walmart's examples are $50, $100 or $200 — within which the agent can buy on its own. Profiles can be deleted at any time.

The guardrails are strict by default: approval is the default setting, Walmart can demand extra approvals even within an authorized limit, agents never receive payment-card data and cannot change payment methods, and rule-breakers get blocked. “We price products, not people,” the company says — agents see the same prices, offers and fees as humans on Walmart.com.

The rollout includes an Agent Gateway giving outside agents a purpose-built shopping API on Anthropic's Model Context Protocol — starting in beta for developers — instead of screen-scraping a site built for humans, which Walmart calls slow and error-prone. The gateway will also let agents restock a customer's “usuals” without seeing their broader purchase history.
