THE SHORT VERSION

Opera's browser now runs AI on your laptop — no data center needed

Opera began shipping local AI models directly in its browsers on October 27, starting as an opt-in early preview in Opera One. The models run on the user's own computer — Google's Gemma and, on Macs, Apple's on-device foundation model at launch — so text generation, classification, and related tasks happen without sending data to a cloud service.

Opera's browsers chief put it bluntly: much of what people want from AI doesn't need a data center, and users decide what runs on their machine. The company says the design means no AI subscriptions and no per-request fees for developers building on it.
