THE SHORT VERSION
Anthropic's $80.7B loss is mostly paper — $72.4B never left the building

Anthropic's half-year net loss totals $80.7 billion, but most of it involves no cash: roughly $72.4 billion traces to the revaluation of convertible notes and similar instruments as the company's own worth climbed, plus $8.72 billion in non-cash charges on other financial instruments.
The operating picture is far smaller. The operating loss was $693 million, down from $2.14 billion a year earlier, adjusted operating income was $1.62 billion, and cash from operations was positive at $3.93 billion — with $112.4 billion in cash and equivalents on hand at June 30.
The filing's other big number is the compute bill behind it: one equipment lease alone requires roughly $125.2 billion in rent across five years, and data-center contracts can keep charging for capacity that sits idle.
