THE SHORT VERSION

ALPHA SCHOOL PROMISED KIDS WOULD LEARN TWICE AS FAST — 58% DIDN'T

A New York Times investigation by Dana Goldstein, published October 23, obtained Alpha School's own test data and found only 42 percent of students progressed twice as fast in both math and reading — the "2x" growth standard the teacherless AI school chain features in its marketing. Alpha runs about 50 campuses for roughly 1,500 K-8 students, with AI apps delivering two to three hours of academics each morning and workshops in the afternoon.

The gap was sharpest for the weakest students: about a fifth of Alpha's private-school pupils scored at or below the 50th percentile nationally in math last fall, and only 37 percent of that group met the promised 2x growth by winter. The Times also describes high attrition, with parents withdrawing children after finding the model demands an extraordinary level of self-discipline — even as the network spreads into public education.
