THE SHORT VERSION
MUSK BORROWED $40 BILLION FOR GPUS — AND PREDICTS 200 RIVALS WILL FOLD
Elon Musk said on X on Sunday that SpaceX has closed $40 billion in callable debt to buy GPUs, with the chips expected to arrive in the first half of 2027. Musk said SpaceX could borrow at that scale because it holds investment-grade credit and earns steady revenue from Starlink and rocket launches — money that does not depend on AI data centers.
Musk paired the announcement with a warning that debt markets have “almost entirely shut off” for companies without substantial revenue outside AI data centers, and predicted that more than 200 “neocloud” providers — firms that rent out AI computing power — will consolidate into a few survivors.
